First in Serampur

With the advent of foreign merchants during 18th Century the exterior of Serampore underwent a change which made history eventful. On the occasion of construction of Ram-Sita Temple and installation of the idol of Ram, the Zamindar of Sheoraphuly offered a few villages viz. Sripur, Gopinathpur, Mohanpur etc. for the service of the deities and this area was renamed as Serampore.

  • 10th January 1800- The Cradle of Modern Mission in the East Established (Serampore Mission)
  • In 1800- First World's largest Printing Established in the Oriental Languages established.
  • In 1800- The first printed Bengali Prose Book : The Gospels of St. Matthew published.
  • In 1800- The first private Botanical Garden in India (Carey's Garden) established.
  • In 1800- First Sunday School established.

  • In 1801- First Printed Prose Book by Bengali author : RamRam Basu's Pratapaditya Carita published.
  • In 1801- First printed book in colloquial Bengali, Carey's Kathopakathan published.
  • In 1802- First success of Social Reform Movement : Child throwing to water was prohibited by the efforts of Carey.
  • In 1802- The Ramayana and the Mahabharata first printed in Bengali (first in any languages)
  • In 1804-26- First printed books in some of the Indian languages started to be publish.
  • In 1804- First statistical reports about Widow burning prepared.
  • In 1809- First Paper Manufactory (Tread Mill) in Bengal.
  • In 1809- First moveable Chinese types prepared and Chinese typographical printed started.
  • In 1811- First attempt to prepare Polyglot Vocabularies in 13 languages completed.( It could not be printed as fire consumed major parts of the work in 1812)
  • In 1811- First survey of (unofficial) the condition of the Education in Bengal conducted by the Serampore Mission.
  • In 1816- First attempt to educate the females in Mission's School was made.
  • In 1816-18 - First in India a Missionary Society established 100 Schools with 10,000 Students.
  • In 1816-18 - First in India a Normal School for teachers training established.
  • In 15th Aug 1818- Serampore College, first Missionary College and second oldest one in India established.
  • 1818- First periodical in any Indian Languages published Bengali monthly DIGDARSHAN.
  • 1818- Teaching of Eastern Literature and Western Science together first introduced in Serampore College.
  • 1818- Western Science teaching with experimental demonstration first introduced in Serampore College.
  • 1818- First introduction of mother tongue as medium of instruction at all stages of education was made in Serampore College.
  • 1809- First Savings Bank in India was established.
  • 1809- First Hindi periodical DIGDARSHAN appeared.
  • 1809- First printed book in Bengali on Science vidyaharabali by Felix Carey was published.
  • 1809- First Steam Power used in India for Industrial purposes in the Paper Mill of Serampore Missions.
  • 1821- First printed book in Bengali on Chemistry Kimiya Vidyarsar by John Mack was composed.
