Hooghly district is an Agricultural belt. Serampore is a sub-divisional town in this District. Harmoney between the Religion and culture is the main feature of it. Serampore came into being after uniting and submerging the three villages namely Gobindpur,Sripur and Mohanpur. Main Purpose of making Serampore was to make it a religious place . A town of Temples, Mosques and Churches. But with the arrival of Sir William Carrey on 10th Jan 1800 Serampore saw the enlightenment of education and culture.

Jagannath Temple

Dhruwanand Brahmachari, a devote of Lord Jagannath made a hut and a very small temple of Lord Jagannath in the bank of river Bhagirathi in Mahesh.Later the king of Murshidabad Nawab Khan Walison made contribution of 1185 Biggha of property for the service of Lord Jagannath .The old temple being engulfed by the Ganga the present one was constructed after the model of famous Jagannath temple of Puri by Sri Nimaycharan Mallick in 1755.Nayanchand Mallick made the contribution of land for the present temple. Kamlakar Pippalai, a close disciple Of Sir Chaitanya was the worshipper of the deity and his descendants are steel continuing with this service.

Serampore Rathyatra

In the era of 1300 Rathyatra begin in Serampore. In this festival an enormous iron-cast car (Chariot) of Lord Jagannath along with Balram and Subhadra a large procession is taken out every year. Every Sectors of people participate to pull the Chariot from Jagannath temple to Masirbari (Aunty's house). The Car festival at Mahesh in its enormity and fame is next to that of Puri only. The very first Chariot was made by Janaik Modak than was followed by Krishnaram Basu of Basu family. It was followed by Guru Prasad Basu then Kalichand Basu. Present iron–cast chariot was made in the year 1885by Krishna Chandra Basu.

Serampore College

Serampore College is the pride of Serampore. The Serampore Missionaries under the leadership of Dr.WilliamCarrey declared on 15th July 1818 the prospect of the establishment of Serampore College.They acquired 8 bighas of land on the bank of Ganga and laid its foundation stone for the Construction of this building Dr. Carey, Mr Ward and Mr.Marshman spent their entire saving and income as well . The project was accorded sanction by the king of Denmark and 1827 a Royal Charter was granted empowering the institution to confer degrees, the first and only university of its kind in Asia. Beside this Serampore College offers degrees in Science, Arts and Commerce Stream

St. Olave's Church

This Lutheron Church was constructed between 1800 and 1805 and dedicated to Saint Olave. The cost involved in the construction was not less than Rs.18,500 which was raised through subscription in Serampore, Calcutta and Denmark at the initiative of Col.Ole Bie, the then Danish Governer, who could not see the work completed before his death in 1805. The gateway still bears the monogram of King Fredrick VI of Denmark.

Buro-Bibi Mosque

It is one of the oldest heritage mosque of Serampore. Every kind of religion persons come here to prey the Allah in their own manner.

Gouranga Mandir

Sri Kasiswar Pandit a disciple of Lord Sri Chaitanya Maha prabhu established the Statue of Lord Gouranga in the Year 1455 at village Chatra where the original Gouranga Mandir is situated today. It is learnt that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu once visited this temple on the way to Nemai Tirtha Ghat at Baidyabati on his journey by boat through Ganga. This temple now taken over by Archeological department, Govt. of West Bengal. It is also recorded in the holy Baishnab Grantha. The Dole-Jatra festival has been started since then.

The Goswamis of Serampore, are the descendants of one of the five Brahmin families whom Adisur, King of Gaur had invited to settle in Bengal, with gifts of land and monies, for the propagation of knowledge.
